Focusing on the Beginning Farmers & Ranchers Program, this panel will bring together knowledgeable voices, including the FSA Administrator and successful ranch operators, to explore the comprehensive support available for new entrants to the industry.

Speakers:

  • Zach Ducheneaux, FSA Administrator: With extensive experience in agricultural policy and administration, the FSA Administrator will offer valuable insights into the federal support programs available for beginning farmers and ranchers.
  • Jimmy Stewart: Owner of Big Country Genetics, Stewart has successfully established his operation as a premier source for quality genetics in the cattle industry. He will share his journey, challenges, and strategies for success.
  • Ian Glennie: As the Montana Stockgrowers Young Cattlemen Chair, Ian Glennie represents the next generation of ranchers. He will provide insights from his experience navigating the industry and advocating for young cattlemen.
  • Trent Stoltz: Trent Stoltz is a Montana Farmers Union Board Member and fourth-generation rancher. Along with his wife of 27 years, he operates a yearling, cow-calf, and hay ranch with his son Austin. Stoltz is hopeful his other son, Cameron, will return as well and will share experiences on ushering the next generation back into the fold.

 

Improving the Tax Climate

Join us for an engaging panel at the Cattle Producer’s Forum focusing on one of the most pressing issues faced by farmers and ranchers today: the tax climate.  This session will feature insightful perspectives from esteemed speakers who will delve into the intricacies of capital gains taxes, estate planning, and the current legislative landscape influencing tax policies in the agricultural sector.

Speakers:

  • John Grande: From the Montana Stockgrowers Association, John brings rich experience and leadership in agricultural policy and advocacy.
  • Mike VanMaanenMike is the current President of the Livestock Marketing Association (LMA). He joined the association’s government and industry affairs committee in 2014 and the board of directors in 2016. The World Livestock Auctioneer Championship was VanMaanen’s gateway to LMA leadership. He grew up on a corn, soybean and hog farm in Iowa.
  • Jesse Anderson: Representing Senator Tester’s office, Anderson will share insight into legislative efforts and support mechanisms impacting tax policies for the agricultural sector.
  • Tory Kolkhorst: Representing Senator Daines’s office, Kolkhorst will provide perspectives on current legislative initiatives and their implications for estate planning and tax policies in ranching and farming.

 

Improving the Livestock Risk Protection Program

Join us for an insightful discussion focused on “Improving the Livestock Risk Protection Program.” This panel will convene industry experts, including Joe Kovanda and Brett Crosby, to examine the current state of the Livestock Risk Protection (LRP) program, assess its efficacy, and explore necessary improvements to better serve livestock producers.

Speakers:

  • Joe Kovanda: Joe brings a wealth of experience in agricultural risk management and policy, with a specific passion for advocating robust agricultural policies and creative risk management solutions. His notable achievements include being recognized in Drovers’ “40 Under 40” and authoring “The Viewpoint,” where he offers expert insights and guidance for the agriculture community.
  • Brett Crosby: Brett is a renowned expert in livestock risk protection and market analysis. He excels in providing deep, actionable insights into market dynamics and risk management practices that significantly benefit livestock producers. Creator of the Beefbasis tool, Brett’s work has been instrumental in advancing tools and strategies that help producers navigate market risks effectively.

 

Addressing Labor Challenges

Focusing on the vital issue of addressing labor challenges in ranching, this panel will bring together industry leaders to unpack the complexities of agricultural labor reform and explore innovative solutions to support the workforce needs of the ranching community.

Speakers:

  • Mike Hollenbeck: Hollenbeck is a multi-generation Montana rancher, representative for Northern Livestock Video Auction and part of a family-owned meat processing company. He brings to the conversation knowledge of employing various ag operations whether it be with family or outside hires.
  • Turk Stovall: Turk Stovall is a fifth generation Montana rancher. Stovall Ranches LLC is a diversified ranch in Yellowstone and Big Horn counties on the Crow Indian Reservation operating as a cow/calf, hay production and backgrounding to grass operation. Before returning home to the ranch, Turk held management positions with Certified Angus Beef LLC, North Platte Feeders, Inc and ORIgen, Inc. Stovall serves as the current Second Vice President of the Montana Stockgrowers Association.V
